Does My Cat Love Me?

my cat hugs me with her body
she’s so warm on my skin
my hand feels her heart beat
under her dark fur
when she’s happy with how
I stroke her
she shows her claws then
retracts them into soft paws
then yawns while she purrs
her teeth are very sharp

Windover, Florida

Fetal in the bog they lay, heads pointed west,
when the backhoe lifted clay from clay.
Skulls in the bucket. Whose were they?
Police said: Not from the prosecutable era
of crime. Science time. They found traces
of elderberry, death’s last stay, staining the muck
where stomachs decayed, which led them
to say this had been a burial ground. And the bodies
were staked down to keep them underwater—
it was a water tomb. Carbon said seven thousand years,
brains dead and pickled in the brine. They fed them
to the oracle, but DNA pronounced unclear.
Whose were they? The issue remained fogged.
A few made them white as if that were a light
to prove they’ve a right to this land.
But their land is sand—we’re all brown as the bog.

Vacuum

cosmos no air to breathe
like inside the machine
I push to suck crumbs
from my carpet my model’s
unique I bought it from
space so it’s invisible
and I’m the priest
hand raised every week
over the floors of my house
blessing all the dust sucked up
into the cup no one sees

memorial day poem

are trees as green as they ever were?
I feel they are but cannot know
green of a long time ago
could it be a leaf is not the green
it used to be? if so if now
something has changed in what we see
only the oldest tree knows when or how
tree if I could find you    if you exist
I would ask what was that color
if it was     I’m not too sure
what then would you say?
it’s shady here     sit awhile
you won’t know today

liberty tax liberty pawn and gun liberty dialysis are the names of companies
wishing to influence the decisions of potential customers through association
with the positive connotations of the word liberty which
according to its first definition in webster’s dictionary
means the quality or state of being free and is considered by many
to be a good thing as contrasted with definition number three

b: risk, chance; c: a violation of rules or a deviation from standard practice;
and d: a distortion of fact ie: the news story takes many liberties
with actual events actual being assumed to mean something that happened
in the world outside of someone’s head not within though it gets harder and harder
to tell which is which by which I mean which
definition of liberty is meant when I pawn my electric guitar buy a gun pay someone
to help me pay my taxes or three times a week flush my body’s
waste from my blood with a machine because my kidneys have failed?

and I always make sure to drink fluids not too little not too much
to keep the color 24 karat gold     no that’s not true     I take liberties with my tale
for the sake of sarcasm     a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance
designed to cut or give pain     which begs the question whose

[it flew half mast today]

it flew half mast today
I hadn’t heard the news so
I didn’t know
if someone I care about
had been killed by someone
I don’t or maybe
just died of their own body’s disease
I didn’t check my phone
to find out the catastrophes
my daily drug unswallowed
I can hold the pills in my hand
crimes peacefully unfold explode
who is mangled
Not a soul
